West Side Jazz Club

Scotty Silver, tenor saxophonist and founder and leader of West Side Jazz Club, is a Bronx native of the fourth generation of New Yorkers. Son of Pearl and Seymour Silverberg, two enthusiastic Swing aficionados, he was exposed to the sounds and feelings of jazz at an early age. In 1980, he brought his saxophone to San Francisco, where he has performed ever since. He founded West Side Jazz Club in 2003. Numerous musicians have passed through the “Club,” where many long-lasting relationships have been forged. Scotty’s distinctive technique is influenced by Archie Shepp, Sonny Rollins, Stan Getz (also from the Bronx), and Wayne Shorter, among others.

By way of a narrow alley that leads to Bix’s front door, leave the contemporary world behind and embrace the Mad Man era. This softly illuminated nightclub serves foie gras and caviar alongside negronis and flawless manhattans, all to the sounds of classic jazz pianists, singers, and trios. Sunday through Thursday beginning at 7:30 p.m., and Friday and Saturday beginning at 8:30 p.m.

The Fillmore

The Fillmore, which has a capacity of 1,200, was constructed in 1912, but is better known as the stage from which Bill Graham launched his rock-promotion empire and the 1960s “San Francisco Sound” with bands such as the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Santana, Quicksilver Messenger Service, and Big Brother and the Holding Company. In the ’70s and ’80s, the venue changed hands multiple times and became a private neighborhood club and a punk hangout before reopening in the ’90s and becoming the powerhouse it is today. The performers who play here are typically on the cusp of megastardom or have already reached their zenith and are seeking the intimacy that only this famous room can offer.
